Getting Western Australia hacking

GovHack is Australia’s national open-data hackathon. In 2025 I helped run the Western Australian region as Deputy Regional Lead.

My part

• Participant communications. I planned and sent the Mailchimp campaigns that took registered participants from sign-up to the weekend and through to judging.
• Social content for the regional channels of a national community event.
• Volunteer team and logistics. I coordinated the people, the schedule and the small problems that come up on a hackathon weekend.

What I learnt

Community marketing is mostly timing. The right email on the Thursday before an event does more than any amount of posting the week after.
